In a tragic turn of events, two workers linked to the bar in Laos where Australian teenagers Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones lost their lives to methanol poisoning have fled the country. The young women, both 19-year-olds from Melbourne, fell victim to tainted alcohol while staying at the Nana Backpackers Hostel. Their deaths were part of a larger incident that claimed the lives of six international victims who had consumed the toxic beverage at the establishment.
The recent revelation by the Herald Sun disclosed that the two men, who were employed as a bartender and a hostel manager at the time of the tragedy in November last year, have now secured new jobs in Vietnam. Following their departure from the Laos tourist town of Vang Vieng, it was reported that the former hostel manager, known as Pikachu, had found employment at a new hostel in his native Vietnam. Meanwhile, the former bartender had landed a job at a hotel in the same country.
These individuals were among several detained in connection with the incident, which also led to the arrest of hotel staff and management. While the Laotian government pledged to hold the perpetrators accountable under the law, no charges have been brought forth, and scant details have been released regarding the mass poisoning case since November.
Aside from the Australian teens, the casualties included an American man, two Danish women, and a British woman who also succumbed to methanol poisoning at the hostel. Jones and Bowles had partaken in free shots of alcohol offered by the hostel before falling ill. Despite their deteriorating condition, they remained in their room for an entire day without checking out as scheduled. Subsequently, they were admitted to a hospital in Laos before being transferred to Thailand for further medical care, where their parents rushed to be by their sides.
Mark Jones, the father of Bianca, expressed his desire for the Australian Government to exert pressure to ensure justice for all involved in the tragic incident. The use of methanol, a highly toxic form of alcohol commonly found in industrial and cleaning products, in alcoholic beverages can have deadly consequences, with as little as 30ml being potentially lethal.
Methanol poisoning outbreaks often stem from the addition of the chemical to drinks, either accidentally during brewing processes or intentionally for profit. Incidents like these are not uncommon, especially in regions like Asia, where low safety standards, lax regulatory enforcement, and corruption can contribute to such tragedies.
