Aziz Behich, the captain of Melbourne City and a prominent figure in Australian soccer, has a story that goes beyond the boundaries of a regular football career. Growing up in Meadow Heights, near Broadmeadows in Melbourne’s north-west, Behich always cherished challenges. Little did he know that these challenges would lead him to share unforgettable moments with some of the biggest names in world football.
Behich’s journey took him from marking Argentine superstar Lionel Messi in a crucial World Cup match to embracing Cristiano Ronaldo as a teammate during his loan spell at Al Nassr. These experiences have shaped Behich into the seasoned player and leader he is today.
Reflecting on his time with Ronaldo, Behich fondly recalls,
“I got to share the pitch with, for me, the greatest footballer to play the game and celebrate his goals as well.”
Celebrating goals with Ronaldo taught him an important lesson:
“You obviously have to wait for him to do his celebration before you start celebrating with him.”
His career highlights extend beyond playing alongside global icons. In Turkey’s Super League, Behich faced intense rivalries that tested his skills and character. Recalling his time in Turkey, he shared,
“It gives you experience at a higher level… I’ve always been one to embrace challenges and test myself against the best in the world.”
Behich’s journey wasn’t without its pivotal moments. A sliding doors moment occurred when he missed a critical goal opportunity while playing for Victory in the 2009-2010 grand final against Sydney FC. This setback led him to Melbourne Heart (now City), where he flourished as a left-back under coach John van’t Schip’s guidance.
Van’t Schip’s decision proved instrumental as Behich went on to earn 75 caps for the Socceroos, win an Asia Cup in 2015, participate in two World Cups, and enjoy a decade-long European club career.
As captain of Melbourne City, Behich sets an exemplary standard for his team. Coach Aurelio Vidmar praised Behich’s leadership qualities by stating:
“The only one who could do… Aziz has been instrumental… He can sense it.”
Behich’s influence extends beyond the field; he plays a crucial role both on and off-pitch dynamics within the team.
Looking ahead to leading City into battle at AAMI Park for an A-League grand final showdown against Melbourne Victory holds special significance for Behich. “Winning championship at home would be special… It’s made me the person I am today,” proudly expressed by Behich reflecting on his roots from Meadow Heights.
Behich’s remarkable journey reflects not only success on-field but also resilience and adaptability off-field – qualities that continue to inspire aspiring young players around Australia.
