Ranch Sorting National Championships Australia manager Lonnie Henderson, Ranch Sorting National Championships Australia rookie national champion Lisa Shalders, Texan saddle maker Todd Jeys, who made the winning prize saddle, and Ranch Sorting National Championships Australia chief executive Cindy Henderson. Wagin’s Lisa Shalders was named the 2025 Ranch Sorting National Championships Australia rookie national champion and graduated beginner reserve champion at Dubbo Showground in New South Wales on April 27.

Lisa Shalders, a first-time competitor at the Ranch Sorting Nationals, made a remarkable debut by clinching two Australian titles in 2025. Returning to Wagin with accolades from New South Wales, this 34-year-old dynamo took the crown as the rookie national champion and also secured the position of beginner reserve champion at the prestigious Ranch Sorting National Championships Australia held at Dubbo Showground on April 27. Organized by the WA Team Penners Association Inc, this four-day annual event showcases the skills of two riders on horseback collaborating to sort numbered cattle into their designated pens in numerical sequence, with speed being the determining factor for victory.

Despite her relatively short equestrian journey that began just two years ago, Shalders demonstrated exceptional prowess by riding a borrowed horse named Beau at the nationals. Unable to transport her trusted 14-year-old Quarter horse Chex due to work commitments, she embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. Reflecting on her experience, Shalders described the competition as “unreal,” emphasizing the significance of this milestone achievement in her inaugural national appearance. She expressed gratitude for the supportive and inclusive environment of the sport, highlighting the camaraderie she shared with the team WA crew, whose companionship enhanced her competition experience.

Shalders’ venture into ranch sorting traces back to February 2024 when her friend Shelby Davies introduced her to the sport. Motivated by a desire to engage in pony riding and cattle chasing alongside her friend, Shalders embarked on a transformative journey that surpassed her initial expectations. Acknowledging Davies as a pivotal figure in her success, Shalders attributed her accomplishments to their shared passion and mutual support. Anticipating the upcoming season with fervor, she expressed optimism for the future of the sport and the promising opportunities it holds for her and her peers.

Having secured the title of WA beginner State champion in 2024, Shalders harbors ambitious aspirations of representing her country at the esteemed Worlds competition in America. Grateful for the unwavering support of her mother Helen Shalders, partner Gary Brass, and the entire RANCA community, she remains steadfast in her pursuit of excellence and growth within the realm of ranch sorting. With a spirit fueled by determination and a heart brimming with gratitude, Shalders exemplifies the essence of perseverance and passion in the arena of equestrian sports.

As Lisa Shalders basks in the glory of her recent triumphs, her journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of dedication and camaraderie in the pursuit of excellence. Her story resonates as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring riders and seasoned competitors alike, underscoring the profound impact of unwavering support and relentless pursuit of one’s dreams in the realm of competitive equestrianism. Amidst the jubilant celebrations and accolades, Shalders’ narrative stands as a poignant reminder of the boundless possibilities that unfold when passion, perseverance, and purpose converge in perfect harmony.
