As the red four-door helicopter sat before me with its doors off, I couldn’t believe I was about to confront one of my greatest fears—flying in an open aircraft. The pilot, Greg Ross, casually mentioned that an aircon would cost a hefty sum or I could simply opt for the wind-in-my-hair experience. Greg and his wife, Gabby, reside in the picturesque Friendly Beaches within Freycinet National Park, offering a warm welcome at their cozy home adorned with family memories and a telescope for stargazing.
Their aviation company, Freycinet Air Tasmania, operates from this charming abode. Despite my apprehension, Greg’s enthusiasm for the upcoming doors-off adventure and Gabby’s unwavering trust in his expertise convinced me to push past my fears. With a racing heart, I geared up for the unforgettable journey, taking in the breathtaking views as we soared over Wineglass Bay and the majestic Hazards mountain range.
Flying during the cooler months in Tasmania provided a unique perspective, with Greg highlighting the magical play of light on the landscape. Even a whale sighting extended our flight time as Greg ensured we didn’t miss this awe-inspiring encounter. Tourism Tasmania’s CEO, Sarah Clark, aptly described Tasmania as an extraordinary place inhabited by remarkable people, a sentiment I wholeheartedly echoed.
Back on terra firma, bidding farewell to Greg and Gabby, I reflected on the exhilarating experience before indulging in a well-deserved whisky tasting at Waubs Harbour Whisky in Bicheno. The thrill of the adventure lingered as I shared my triumph with loved ones, still buzzing with excitement. Tasmania, with its diverse offerings from nature to culinary delights, effortlessly captivates visitors, especially during the quieter winter months.
My journey to Tasmania, courtesy of Tourism Tasmania, not only quelled my fears but also opened my eyes to the wonders of this island paradise. From heart-pounding adventures to tranquil moments, Tasmania offers a tapestry of experiences waiting to be explored.
