The historic moment unfolded during a routine review by threatened-species officers from the NSW environment department who were surveying for the critically endangered smoky mouse. As they sifted through nearly 1 million wildlife camera images, one image stood out – that of a Leadbeater’s possum near the Yarrangobilly Caves. Dr. Fred Ford, the senior threatened-species officer behind this significant find, described his excitement saying,
“It was amazing to see that distinctive bushy tail waving among the rows of images on the screen – it jumped right out at me.”
This revelation came on the heels of an extensive culling program aimed at removing wild horses from Kosciuszko National Park. The eradication of 9036 horses paved the way for this groundbreaking discovery – marking the first recorded sighting of a Leadbeater’s possum in NSW since European settlement.
Leadbeater’s possums are no strangers to miraculous comebacks. In Victoria, these creatures were once believed to be extinct until a small population was unearthed in mountain ash forests back in 1961.
